Concrete Tiles

Concrete roof tiles are similar to clay tiles with regards to their properties. They are gaining traction in areas prone to severe weather. Tornadoes, hurricanes and any storm with high winds can cause a lot of damage to houses, even flatten them. In recent years, we’ve experienced a higher occurrence of extreme weather therefore we’ve been trying to find ways to make our roofs stronger than they already are. concrete roof tiles

Concrete tiles are one of the strongest roofing materials. They are long lasting, and coupled with a long warranty makes them an attractive choice. They can take a beating from harsh weather without much damage. Advancements in concrete technology allow manufacturers to build tiles in any traditional roofing design. They can be fitted into all kinds of modern designs in a wide range of colors. It is not uncommon to find concrete roofing tiles shaped like interlocking slate or to resemble fine ceramic.

Concrete roofs can be built as a flat structure or complex with a sloped design. The sloped concrete roof is more expensive but it can be shaped and designed with any finish. Both tiles or shingles can give your home a desired look. Its durability and high customization are two major selling points! In Florida and hurricane-prone countries (Caribbean islands), the flat concrete roof is typical as it is the most durable form of roof.

As we mentioned, concrete tiles are very similar to clay tiles. Low maintenance, energy efficiency, fireproof are all traits they share. Also similar to clay tiles, it is important that if you make the decision of purchasing a concrete roof, you choose a highly experienced contractor. Concrete is also heavy and your home needs to be assessed to determine whether it is structurally fit for this type of roof.

This type of roof is no cheap investment. It’s a decision that will last you a lifetime. For this reason, a concrete roof is still an economical choice. With little maintenance and a long life, a long-term return on the investment is to be made.

Questions to ask yourself before purchasing concrete roof tiles

  • Do the concrete tiles have an energy certification (such as Energy Star rating or LEED rating)? An energy efficient tile will lead to lower overall energy cost in the long run. In addition, you may be able to get a subsidy or government rating for energy efficient tiles!
  • Have the tiles been tested for their durability and resistance? It is important that the tiles have been put through test to determine how resistant they are to high winds, how resistant they are to water, fire as well as algae? Do not purchase tiles that are not resistant to winds of at least 120mph or do not have a Class A fire rating.
  • Of all shingle materials, concrete tiles are subject to the most discoloration. How easy are the tiles to rejuvenate? Can they simply be resealed?
  • Do the concrete roof tiles come with an extended warranty? The majority of manufacturers and suppliers will offer a limited warranty. It varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. You will want to dig deep through the documentation to ensure you understand what it covers.
